About Us

Television about Scotland, for Scotland

It's time for Scotland to be properly represented in the media. The Scotland Channel aims to reflect the Scottish people, life, culture and achievements of this great wee country.

Our mission is to put Scotland centre-stage

Scotland is poorly served by its existing mainstream broadcast media with just 8.1% of programming in Scotland currently devoted to Scottish domestic audiences.

In Germany, 50% of TV programming is aimed at German domestic audiences and in most other countries of the world, the amount of domestic television shown is way higher than in Scotland.

That's because Scotland's media landscape is dominated by mostly English and non-UK owned mainstream media with the vast majority of its output being English-centric.

Now we've nothing against English shows on English TV, but in Scotland, we believe viewers should be able to see positive Scottish content about their own country and we aim to fill that gap because, at present, Scottish life, culture and achievements are being largely downgraded and overshadowed.

Worse still, what little Scottish content there is on UK/English mainstream media in Scotland generally presents Scotland in a negative light at every opportunity.

However, at The Scotland Channel, we believe that Scotland is an awesome wee country with a big story to tell.

And what's more, there are 78 countries in the world which are actually smaller than Scotland.

And when you consider that Scotland has shaped the modern world with its countless inventions, discoveries and independent thinkers, then we think Scotland deserves to be better represented by its media and that's where we aim to fill the void.

After all, Brand Scotland is loved internationally and aside from expat Scots, there are also millions of people with Scottish ancestry or people who simply love Scotland, so we hope that our channel will appeal to them too wherever they live in the world.

The Scotland Channel is owned by S24 TV Limited based in Glasgow's West George Street.

The original aim was to set up a linear TV channel in addition to The Scotland Channel called Scotland 24 TV. This would have been more focussed on news and current affairs.

But because of the way people are watching television these days, scheduled programming is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

Most people prefer to pick and choose what content they want to watch, when they want to watch it, through on demand streaming services such as BBC i-Player, Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube.

Many of these streaming channels require a subscription to view.

However, The Scotland Channel will remain free-to-view because telling Scotland's story as it deserves to be told is important to us.

If you agree and like our shows, please help to keep the channel sustainable and free to view. It won't cost you a penny to do, but it will help us to continue to create great Scottish content. This is how you can help.

Because we are streaming our shows through our YouTube channel so that they can be viewed on smart TVs as well as on phones, tablets and desk top computers, we are dependent on the advertising revenues we generate through YouTube so we would ask that you don't skip the ads.

You can also support our channel by liking and subscribing to our YouTube channel >>here.

What's more, we welcome all constructive feedback on our shows as well as anything you would like to see covered in future. The only requirement is that it is about Scotland.

And, if you want to get involved with the channel, especially if you have previous television or social media experience including as a researcher, scriptwriter, director or camera operator, we'd also love to hear from you! Contact us now at: info@scotland24.tv.
